History & heritage
Slovakia is a country often dubbed as the country of thousand castles and manor-houses. The reason is the location of the country, which in the Middle Ages required building of sheltered residences or various types of fortification. Castles during middle ages had various functions. That included a refuge for marauding knights or a shelter for ordinary peasants during raids of many tribes coming from the east.
Slovakia is rich with historic monuments, which are scattered through whole country. The evidence of global significance of slovak historic monuments is the list of world heritage UNESCO. On this list are Banská Štiavnica, Levoča, Spišský castle, Vlkolinec, Bardejov and wooden churches located in the eastern Slovakia.
The UNESCO list of Slovak historic monuments is short. Many of castles remain unknown and unexplored by tourism.
