Burghers of Košice return to the place where they used to spend their free time 200 years ago
What happens if stories return to the place where the ones who told them used to spend their free time? Time turns back the way it did when a successful exhibition ‘Košice promenade – the photo album’ moved from the Museum of Eastern Slovakia to the oldest hotel in Slovakia – Bankov.
Unique exhibition this October and November in a unique hotel
The successful exhibition, which started at the end of May, was open until the end of September in the museum of Eastern Slovakia on Hviezdoslavova Street. It commemorates the 125th anniversary of Teodor Münster, the mayor of Košice, being presented, in 1886, with an album which contained photographs of burghers and other important persons of Košice. The exhibition will be open from the 3rd October until the 30th of November in the Bankov Hotel – the very place where the persons from the pictures used to spend their free time. In the 19th century, Bankov was a popular retreat where the citizens of Košice would enjoy music, dancing and life. Its popularity increased even more after a new road was built in 1864 and in 1869, the opening of the first hotel in Slovakia – the Bankov Hotel, marked the beginning of the golden age of this place. Wealthy citizens of the town even built their luxury country houses in the area where they liked to spend their free time.
“The exhibition is a good example of the cooperation made possible by the Košice – Tourism cluster, since both the Bankov Hotel and the Museum of Eastern Slovakia are its members. The unique traditional atmosphere of the hotel is enhanced by the photographs of the people responsible for its creation. The exhibition visitors will be able to enjoy the nostalgia of the times long past” says Marián Miškov, the owner of the hotel.
Not only the hotel guests but everyone leaving the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy autumn nature or a cup of coffee is welcome to take a walk down the Košice promenade. It only takes 5 minutes to get here from the city centre.
